How did your creative path began, tell us about your life story
My name is Inhee Ma, and I am Korean. I moved to France over ten years ago, driven by the desire to continue my art studies in a new country. I felt the need to discover a different way of seeing, understanding, and creating art. It seemed natural to settle in France, a country with a rich artistic history, and I was drawn to the French art scene, which I considered dynamic and contemporary. I was also attracted to many aspects of French culture, including the language, food, music, and cinema.
I had the privilege of studying at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier (ESBA), where I earned my degree. Since then, I have participated in numerous group exhibitions in France and abroad. I have also presented my installations, drawings, and various other forms of artistic expression at art fairs. These experiences have not only fueled my passion for art but have also allowed me to develop my own artistic vision.
How did your love for ceramics begin, and how has it evolved?
In 2021, I started working with clay while sharing a studio with two ceramic artists. There was no pottery wheel in the studio, so I decided to use slab-building techniques, which turned out to be one of the origins of my current style. I was fortunate to receive warm feedback from the very beginning, both from friends and visitors to the studio. It was then that I realized it was worth fully dedicating myself to this new pursuit, and that’s how INI CÉRAMIQUE was born!
In what way does living in Paris influence you and your art?
I don’t live in Paris anymore! I am based in a small village in Burgundy. I wanted to be closer to nature and enjoy wide, beautiful landscapes, where I can go for walks with my big dog. Additionally, it allowed me to move to a bigger place than my tiny Parisian one-bedroom apartment. Burgundy seemed perfect for all these reasons, and it’s also not too far from Paris, which is very convenient when I want to go back into the city!
Overall, my inspirations come from various elements that are, in a way, interconnected. Primarily, they include art, the blending of international cultures, and both contemporary and traditional techniques and aesthetics.
What makes your art so exceptional and stand out? What unique qualities define it?
I’m not sure I’m the best person to answer that question, but my ambition lies in evoking emotions, sparking reflection, and encouraging a new appreciation for the beauty inherent in our everyday lives.
How did Greek influences come to shape your art, and what personal connection do you have with Greece?
To be honest, my first collections were quite minimal, with no drawings—just a strong focus on the shapes of the vases. However, my time in France exposed me to the works of many incredible artists and diverse cultures, broadening my perspective. It inspired me to embrace more freedom in my creations and expand my artistic expression.
Also, I’ve been fascinated by traditional craftsmanship and decorative motifs. This love for ancient designs has stayed with me, and it felt natural to explore the beauty of Greek heritage.
I’ve always been intrigued by Ancient Greece—its mythology, epic stories, and symbolic elements. These influences provided a rich source of inspiration for my work.
What would you consider the main highlights of your career, and what goals are you pursuing now?
Being able to produce and live with my and by my creations! This is a real success, I believe. Goals is to keep going even further, in terms of creativity and freedom.
Which collaborations have been the highlights of your artistic journey?
I haven’t done a lot of collaborations so I would say the highlights are when I hear compliments and people interested in my work. It is always a great source of motivation and a good moral boost!
What about your new collection What themes or ideas does it explore?
Ceramics have allowed me to explore the intersection between the functionality of everyday objects and the conversations they can spark within contemporary art, design, and various world cultures. By combining aesthetic inspiration with functional design, I find real satisfaction in the objects that surround us.
Your philosophy for design
My artistic intention is rooted in creating pieces that transcend their original purpose to become objects that convey narratives, emotions, and contemplation. I aspire to evoke a sensory and intellectual experience in viewers that goes beyond mere utility. Each piece represents meticulous exploration and a constant quest for novel forms, textures, and colors.
Where can someone find your work? Where are your ceramics exhibited or available
The best place would be my eshop! This is where I upload all my collections and products. Otherwise, I am fortunate to have my work presented at Printemps Haussmann and Merci in Paris and nice stores and boutiques all across the world (USA, Australia, Korea, UK, etc).
Your dream project
The next one!
When you enter a room what draws your attention first?
A bit of everything: the place, the people, the little details, the overall atmosphere…
Have you ever designed something besides ceramics?
I was creating contemporary art before launching INI CÉRAMIQUE. I mainly worked on installations, often using plywood that I would bend and draw on with graphite pencil.
