What is your connection with Greece and how do you feel about it?
Greece is where I feel an immense sense of belonging, connection, and peace. It’s my happy place.
My mother Athanasia Stathopoulou immigrated to the United States in 1967. I’ve been coming to Greece since I was 5 years old, spending many childhood and adolescent summers with aunts, uncles, and cousins. Those were the dreamiest slow days, divided between Athens and Evia, and with shorter visits to Marathon, Tinos, and Corfu. I have such fond memories of slow summer days surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, making new friends over games of football and hide-and-seek, and sneaking out during mesimeri to forage the fields, climb trees and eat sun-ripened figs.
As I got older and started a family, visits to Greece were few and far between. Greece became a place of healing and restoration. When I was a young single mother following a divorce, my parents whisked me away to Greece and I fell into the warm embrace of extended family and the healing powers of the Aegean Sea and golden light. When my mother passed away, my father and I went on a pilgrimage to Greece. We needed the time and space to grieve and to feel close to her.
With the oldest generation of my family now passed, I see Greece in a new light. It’s become my playground, to venture deeper into places and experiences, and form new connections. It’s an exciting adventure to follow my curiosities and to absorb endless amounts of inspiration. It’s become a place for celebration as well. Most recently, my daughter got married in the Athens Riviera. To witness my children embracing our Motherland is truly beautiful.
❝To create with my hands gives me an inner calm that nothing else can. I love learning new things, trying, failing, and trying again. It’s a contagious energy really to create something from nothing.❞
What about Tinos, is it just a place you are coming for vacation or is it your dream place?
My earliest memories of Tinos are getting dressed up and leaving at dawn to jump on a ferry from Rafina with my mother and aunt. It was a non-negotiable visit to the shrine of the Holy Church of Panagiotis Evangelistria of Tinos. Now I return to my mother’s favorite island with a curiosity to see it beyond the shrine that sits tall upon the hill. Each time I come, I see Tinos, its land, history, and people in a new light. The island is raw, natural, with strong winds, far from easy living, and yet magical in its own way. There’s a spirit of becoming here that pulls me in like a siren’s call.
So I return year after year to continue the exploration of this island and embrace beautiful synchronicities as they arise. As I wander from village to village, hike along the walking paths, stand tall on the boulders of Volax, I draw nourishment from abundant inspiration. In my uncovering of this island, I’ve met some of the most grounded and talented people, and in doing so, I’ve gotten reacquainted with my inner knowing. I guess you could say Tinos continues to have a spirit that enlightens if you are just willing to go seeking. It was a dream come true to return this past July for a 3-day photo shoot of the Ancestral Collection, my debut line of painterly textiles and wallcoverings.
How did the idea of creating came up and how did it happen to create so many different things?
What I love about creating is that there are no limits, no rules, and it allows me to reconnect with my childlike wonder, to play, explore, follow my intuition and see where it leads me. To create with my hands gives me an inner calm that nothing else can. I love learning new things, trying, failing, and trying again. It’s a contagious energy really to create something from nothing. One idea leads to another and another. I get so excited that I can’t wait for the next day.
❝ I’m living proof that dreams come true. From boardrooms and brain injury to brushstrokes, my life journey is one of healing, second chances, and the strength of spirit to start again. We all have it within us to design the life we love.❞
What were the difficulties and how did you managed to succeed?
Oh my, so many challenges along the way and lots of trial and error. Being self-employed is hard work; I’m always working and it’s hard to turn off my brain. I’m still learning how to balance my time better and not fall into patterns of hustle culture. The creating is the fun part, the escape to beauty and play, but the administrative, business side demands attention as well.
There’s no guidebook to being a creative, and it takes so much courage to be vulnerable and keep putting yourself out there. Lots of rejection that breeds self-doubt. It takes lots of inner work to stay positive. Over the last 10 years, I’ve learned to trust my gut, avoid situations that drain my energy, and only work with good people. When a «no» arrives, I’ve learned to tell myself, «ok, they are not your people, now go find someone else who is.»
What were the concepts of your work that enjoyed the most
I love building up layers and layers of intricate details in paint, playing with dried paint chips from my recycled paint palettes, and getting my hands dirty in clay. I’m currently obsessed with the sgraffito technique for surface design on ceramics.
What is the feedback of your fans
I’m truly so lucky to have a growing group of art collectors and clients from around the world. I adore getting to work one-on-one with people to create custom pieces from paintings to wedding invitations. I’m especially grateful to those who connect with me in multiple ways — purchasing art, participating in a workshop, and coming on a retreat. We start out as a business-to-consumer relationship but we end up as friends.
It’s so rewarding to hear how my creations convey beauty and positivity and uplift the spirits of others. Here are a few testimonials that especially warm my heart and remind me of my purpose.
Tell us about the 1000 vases exhibition story in Paris and your amazing vase selected for the window display
I love handbuilding ceramics but it is such a time-consuming process and from a business standpoint I was debating walking away from it. I’ve never exhibited my ceramics anywhere, and I applied to this opportunity as a test really to let the universe guide me in that decision. When I received the acceptance email, I was surprised and exhilarated, and even thought it was a mistake or a scam.
It turned out to be the most incredible exhibition during Paris Design Week and Maison & Objet. The show was exquisitely curated by Francesco Pirello and Ayan Gouled Orsini, with scenography by Jean Christophe Vaillant, and visual identity by Coco Brun. Ninety-five vases were showcased representing artists from 60 countries on Rue Chapon in the Le Marais district, among other galleries and showrooms.
The Blooming Girls collection was born first in paint as a way of moving through grief after losing my mother. What started as a quiet act of healing has become a celebration of resilience, joy, and new beginnings.
Description:
Handbuilt in stoneware clay using coil method, abstract application of painted underglaze, sgraffito carved design, fully glazed inside and out.
What makes it so special?
It’s captivating to see how a single subject and fundamental object can be interpreted in different forms, techniques, and materials. I was profoundly moved by the artistry. To meet creatives from around the world in one place with a common experience was incredible. It truly was a dream come true to participate in my first international exhibit.
On a personal level, I’ve only been working in ceramics for a couple of years, and yet this journey has led to sharing my work on an international stage. It’s proof to me (and maybe a nudge for you, too) that it’s never too late to try something new, to follow curiosity, and to trust where it might lead.
With hard work and a playful spirit, I’ve come so far from that first coffee cup that was too sharp to drink from and was rejected to pencil holder status. And my test to the universe by applying to this exhibit “should I continue ceramics?” was returned with the most loud message of YES. Truthfully, we should never walk away from things that bring us joy.
❝ I hope that in some way, my journey inspires others to overcome their own challenges and find ways to embrace hope and to walk mindfully through life.❞
What is new in your collection?
After many years of dreaming and preparation, I’m excited to launch the Ancestral Collection in October 2025. It’s my debut line of wallpaper and textiles, rooted in my Greek heritage. Each pattern begins as a piece of original artwork of layered paint, bringing rich texture and depth even in two-dimensional form. The designs channel moments in time during soulful journeys to Greece and are meant to bring the spirit of the Mediterranean into everyday spaces wherever you call home.
The collection will be available direct to consumer through theodoramiller.com. The line will also be available to designers, architects, and hospitality professionals through to-the-trade showrooms and an in-house trade program.
It’s a comprehensive collection of 22 SKUs of fabric and 23 SKUs of wallpaper that is digitally printed to order in the US. The fabric is a linen cotton blend perfect for everyday use. The wallcoverings are available in a traditional smooth clay coated variety for residential use, as well as a smooth type II variety ideal for high traffic residential and commercial uses. International shipping is available upon request.
How your creative path continues, tell us the story of your dream
For now, I am focusing on several priorities: making art, launching my new home collection, and creating/offering transformational experiences. As I look ahead, I want to stay open to new possibilities, as the Universe has a way of providing beautiful synchronicities and opportunities. For me, my best life is lived is at the center of where creativity, connection, and community intertwine. I’m excited for the next chapter to unfold.
Do dreams come true?
I’m living proof that dreams come true. From boardrooms and brain injury to brushstrokes, my life journey is one of healing, second chances, and the strength of spirit to start again. We all have it within us to design the life we love. Is it easy? No. But sometimes our darkest moments reveal a more beautiful way, better than we could have ever imagined.
Which one is your favorite art piece?
It would have to be a collage that I created after my mother passed away. I found her original Greek passport and other documents from the days she left Greece and immigrated to the United States. I was in deep grief then and it felt good to spend time with her as I made it. It now hangs in our family room so when I sit on the sofa, she hangs on the wall beside me. I see the innocence in her young face and it reminds me of her journey, our ancestors, and the courage she had to muster to start a new life in a distant place.
What’s your best art experience ever?
Professionally – exhibiting in Paris
Creatively – my artist residency at Skopelos Foundation of the Arts (October 2023) a profound experience to explore the people and places of this enchanting island and to try new ideas and techniques that continue to shape my creative practice today.
What’s next on your plans
This October, my creations are shifting in softer forms with the launch of ANCESTRAL Collection, my debut of painterly fabrics and wallcoverings, created to bring the Mediterranean spirit into your world.
What is your philosophy of life? Pour love into everything you do.
Your definition of beauty?
The colors and patterns of nature. A confident woman at home in her skin. The humility of a gentle heart. In the smile lines that reveal a life of laughter. Moments with friends and family gathered around a table. A home woven with colors, textures, and treasures that exude comfort and joy. And art that carries a deeper meaning.
Would you like to live in Greece and how often are you coming?
Absolutely! It’s my dream to own a traditional whitewashed house in the Cycladic Islands or a stone cottage in a Peloponnese village. One where I can escape to live simpler days, with a balcony or terrace to create outdoors. I can see it in my mind’s eye – giving my future grandchildren the idyllic Greek summers that I enjoyed as a child.
For the last several years, I’ve been coming to Greece annually and this year I’ve returned three times! I partner with Katrina Paraskevopoulos of Eyia Retreats to Co-host the Art of Living Well retreats. It’s the perfect blend of history, culture, food, creativity, and wellness with curated hands-on experiences. Our first three retreats were sold out and we are releasing our 2026 dates this week. We seek out special locations in Greece to give people a taste of the coveted Mediterranean lifestyle and grant them space to reflect on their own definition of the art of living well. We also have plans for expansion into other Mediterranean countries where Katrina and I have personal connections.
What is Greece for you?
Greece is my sanctuary, my roots, my joy.
Your dream project?
I have so many, but here’s a few:
– collaborate with a hospitality firm to have my Greek-inspired fabrics/wallcoverings incorporated into the design of a resort, restaurant, or wellness center
– aquire art gallery representation in Greece and Europe so that I can exhibit my creations internationally…and enable me to come to Europe more often!
– renovate a modest home in Greece where my family can gather and also host others in mini creative retreats in my home.
The people that stand by you – you seem to share happiness and the joy of life. Is that transmitted to others?
Absolutely! Somehow when you experience the lowest moments of illness, depression, and grief, it gives you perspective and deeper gratitude for moments of joy. I find great pleasure in helping others reconnect with their own creativity and being a source of positivity for them. I hope that in some way, my journey inspires others to overcome their own challenges and find ways to embrace hope and to walk mindfully through life.
