‘The bodies of the audience complete the work,’ says Athens-based artist Theo Triantafyllidis. Co-commissioned and co-produced with Forma, in collaboration with and sponsored by Google Arts & Culture, Triantafyllidis’s commission for the 2026 Frieze London Artist Award is Feral Metaverse (Spider) (2026), a participatory installation that invites visitors to Frieze London to clamber on to a giant spider and take part in a multiplayer game. Players’ avatars lose their inhibitions and identities as they join what the artist calls a ‘bizarre cast of feral creatures’ – having to assist one another to complete goals and overcome impediments.
The work is part of Triantafyllidis’s wider exploration of the digital commons, and how the metaverse might become a more mutually constructive environment. With the support of the award, he has been able to take his practice in new directions through the use of Google AI technologies.
You can encounter Feral Metaverse (Spider) for yourself at this year’s Frieze London, in The Regent’s Park, 14 – 18 October 2026. Produced by Frieze Studios
