For his inaugural solo exhibition in Greece, Cypriot-born, London-based designer Michael
Anastassiades presents a curated selection of lighting, seating, vases, and sculptural objects
across the three levels of the Melas Martinos Gallery in Athens. Featuring more than 20 new
works created for this exhibition, All Colours Will Agree in the Dark investigates the
relationship between illumination, space, and materiality, with an improvisational and
experimental spirit.
Drawing from Ancient Greek and Enlightenment-era theories of light and colour,
Anastassiades conducts a series of playful gestures, challenging the perception of white light
as a fixed entity by revealing its composite coloured nature. The exhibition’s centrepiece is
the RGB series of bamboo uplighters—presented here for the first time—which transform the
gallery’s ceiling into a poetic choreography of colour.
From large-scale light installations to an arrangement of small, curious miscellany displayed
in a free-associative manner on a central table, the works deploy materials intrinsic to the
designer’s practice—including shiratake (white bamboo), carved stone, wire-suspended
lighting elements, and cast bronze, each chosen for its unique dialogue with light.
