Located along the Huangpu River beside Shanghai Expo Culture Park, the Shanghai Grand Opera House featuring a distinctive fan-shaped rooftop and 409-step double-helix staircase officially welcomes guests from home and abroad starting October 17.
The Shanghai Grand Opera House marks a significant new chapter in the city’s cultural landscape, introducing a major destination for the performing arts along the banks of the Huangpu River. Designed by renowned Norwegian architecture studio Snøhetta, the building brings together cutting-edge performance spaces, sculptural architecture and an inviting public realm, conceived to be explored on foot and open to everyone.
Set within an expansive riverside park, the opera house establishes a dialogue with its urban surroundings, drawing on the studio’s experience with landmarks such as the Oslo Opera House, whose accessible roof has become an integral part of the city’s waterfront. In Shanghai, the architecture follows a similarly open approach. Its fluid form rises, twists and gently descends towards the ground, welcoming visitors inside while extending upwards into a roof that doubles as a public promenade and viewing platform overlooking the river and skyline.
Beneath this sweeping roof, a series of curves evokes the movement of the Huangpu River, bringing together restaurants, circulation areas, educational facilities and auditoriums under one unifying architectural gesture. More than a sculptural canopy, the roof is envisioned as a stage, an observation deck and a year-round gathering place, encouraging a shared sense of belonging. A spiralling staircase links the park to the rooftop, framing ever-changing views of the city and transforming the simple act of moving through the building into an essential part of the visitor experience.
