Pigalle. A Parisian locale, nestled at the foot of Montmartre, that has itself become an identity, an attitude – translated indelibly to Pigalle, the iconic shoe that defines Christian Louboutin.
Pigalle is an emblem of Parisianity, of femininity, and nocturnal glamour. Pigalle itself is home to life, to cabaret dancers and torch-song singers, to le Moulin Rouge – a colour inescapable and inextricably connected to that place, and to Christian Louboutin. A colour of passion and desire.
“The Pigalle shoe embodies a whole idea of femininity: by wearing it, women are at the very essence of femininity. In reality, it’s simply a line: if you draw the leg, you see the continuity of the ankle, the instep, and the heel. All of this is part of the same design; nothing protrudes from this shoe”
– Christian Louboutin
First created in the first years of the twenty-first century, Pigalle echoes a rich and storied history. Its origin was ignited by Christian Louboutin’s own childhood memories: a museum sign, with a stiletto crossed out, forbidden and dangerous, fascinating and enticing. Then, a glimpse of its actuality – a woman wearing this shoe, dressed in black, an archetype of pure femininity, an ideal made reality, like a scene from a cherished movie come to life. Consider too the rhythm of the dancers of les Folies Bergère, Christian’s fantasy clients as a teenager, their arched feet moving effortlessly, exaggeration, freedom, an esprit… The dream of Pigalle was ignited.
Expressive of an aesthetic and a celebration of femininity ever-evolving during Christian Louboutin’s first decade of design, refined and honed through expertise and experience, the shoe first known as simply Pigalle was truly born in 2004. From the very beginning, its signifiers were clear and true: a 120mm heel, still considered its ideal height by Christian himself; a vamp with a pronounced, low-cut construction; an elegant yet razor-sharp pointed toe; all balanced on the finest of scarlet soles. Today, it is rechristened, celebrated as La Pigalle – a marker of its singularity, unmistakable and unique.
La Pigalle is an exercise in pure architecture and silhouette, pushed to new heights – it is a shoe as a graphic line, like an illustration, an imagination made physical, the essence of design. Form, laid bare. Yet La Pigalle is much more – it is also an attitude, a means of transformation. When worn, it shifts the dynamic of an entire body through its line. It changes you.
La Pigalle is both a foundation, and a family – a milestone for both the brand and within shoe design, throughout its life it has evolved, forming the inspiration and silhouette behind a multitude of Louboutin models. It defines an entire approach, an aesthetic universe – becoming a canvas for explorations of colours and materials, around the continuum of its iconic shape. A measure of excellence, in design, savoir-faire and inspiration, it is the soul of Christian Louboutin today.
In 2026, La Pigalle evolves. Its essential silhouette remains unchanged – a neo-classic, its refined perfection of proportion cannot be altered. Yet its construction can be lightened, re-calibrated for modern life and modern femininity: the inside offers comfort, a softer silicone-padded construction to cradle the foot as something precious. The emblematic red sole, the mark of Christian Louboutin, has been updated with the new Everlasting Red Sole, preserving its iconic Forever Red colour. That underscores the eternal appeal, the timeless spirit, of this most iconic of all Louboutin creations.
