The project involves the restoration of a portion of a 17th-century Baroque palazzo in the heart of Lecce. Previously abandoned and stripped of its original decorations, the building underwent a profound metamorphosis led by architect Simona Marchetti. The ambitious goal was to transform a “depleted” structure into a private residence that serves as both a manifesto of monastic calm and a gallery of cosmopolitan design.
The main challenge focused on reconfiguring fragmented spatial flows. Through a contemporary reinterpretation of the layout, a strategic distributive axis was created to clearly separate the living and sleeping areas, providing a new sense of perspective depth. The restoration of the majestic star vaults and original interior fixtures preserved the historical soul of the place, while the ancient tower stairwell now leads to an attic studio opening onto a 360-degree panoramic terrace, designed as a modern riad overlooking the internal courtyard.
The choice of materials reflects a tailored approach and constant research. Large-format Pietra Leccese stone flooring was laid to achieve material continuity, dialoguing with walls treated exclusively with natural lime. This neutral “box” enhances the zenithal light and serves as a backdrop for a curated collection of design icons (Carlo Scarpa, Mies van der Rohe, Vico Magistretti) and custom-made furniture.
“My intervention was guided by a profound respect for the genius loci and the desire to move ‘on tiptoe’ within such a distinctive historical context. The project’s philosophy was based on reclaiming what could be salvaged, honoring the soul of the pre-existing structure and enhancing its spaces through the use of simple volumes and emphasizing light. I aimed to create a neutral, material container where design icons dialogue with furniture of my own design, giving life to a place of silence that welcomes me like an embrace every time I return from my professional travels around the world” – Simona Marchetti
