Contemporary art is constantly seeking new ways to engage in dialogue with place, memory, and the forms of life that shape human experience. In this search, certain places possess the power to become living interlocutors in the creative process, carrying stories, knowledge, and cultural practices that evolve continuously over time.
One such place is the historic Kampones Olive Grove in Naxos.
From September 5 to 19, 2026, the historic olive grove will host “Nurturing Mechanisms: Interweavings at Kampones,” an artistic initiative that approaches care as a fundamental cultural and creative process, highlighting the relationship between nature, cultivation, collective memory, and contemporary artistic practice.
Kampones is a place of deep historical continuity, where the natural landscape, human presence, and cultivation of the land come together to form a unified cultural ecosystem. Its ancient olive trees, the history of the family estate, and the enduring relationship between people and the land create an environment that preserves the memory of the place while continuing to generate new forms of creativity.
Within this distinctive setting, the exhibition establishes a meaningful dialogue between contemporary art and the natural environment. The works are created in direct response to the historic olive grove, activating different readings of the agricultural landscape and highlighting the dynamic relationship between matter, time, the gesture of creation, and the natural cycles that shape life.
The concept of Nurturing Mechanisms forms the central axis of the exhibition. Care is approached as an ongoing process of cultivating relationships, knowledge, and experience, through which nature and humanity shape shared forms of evolution. The cultivation of the land takes on a symbolic dimension, conveying ideas of creation, collaboration, the transmission of knowledge, and collective responsibility towards the natural and cultural environment.
The exhibition presents the historic olive grove as a hybrid site where cultural heritage remains active and continues to evolve through contemporary creation. The setting assumes an active role in shaping the visitor’s experience, creating an environment in which nature, art, and human presence come together to form a unified narrative.
The exhibition brings together works by Phoebe Giannisi, Eirini Gonou, Sevastiana Konstaki, Mariandrie, and Katerina Nakou, artists with distinctive practices within the contemporary art scene, whose research spans architecture, poetry, and sculpture to installations, textiles, and interdisciplinary practices. Through diverse expressive approaches, their works form a polyphonic narrative around matter, memory, ecology, craft knowledge, and forms of collective experience.
“Nurturing Mechanisms: Interweavings at Kampones” proposes a contemporary reading of cultural heritage, in which artistic creation becomes a means of research, interpretation, and activation of the landscape. The journey through the historic olive grove unfolds as an immersive experience, encouraging visitors to approach nature as a source of knowledge, continuity, and creative inspiration.
The exhibition was conceived and initiated by Maria Polykreti, president of the cultural organization “Polykriti – Naxos,” who is establishing a long-term cultural vision for Kampones, positioning the historic olive grove as a place where contemporary art enters into a creative dialogue with nature, history, and cultural heritage. Through this initiative, Kampones is evolving into a living cultural hub, with a sustained commitment to artistic creation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the connection between the agricultural landscape and contemporary forms of expression.
The exhibition is curated by Sevastiana Konstaki, who has developed an artistic proposition that interprets care as a creative and cultural act, fostering a meaningful dialogue between the works, the natural environment, and the visitor’s experience. Kampones is steadily evolving into a lived cultural landscape, where culture is activated through the coexistence of nature, history, and artistic practice. The exhibition strengthens this dynamic, contributing to the contemporary dialogue around sustainability, the stewardship of cultural landscapes, and the importance of art as a means of connecting with place and communities.
