One hundred years after its original opening in 1925, the historic Agora Modiano returns to the city as Thessaloniki’s Central Market—a multifaceted destination where gastronomy, shopping, entertainment and events come together under one roof.
For decades, Modiano Market was a crossroads where the city’s flavours, neighbourhoods and residents converged: a vibrant part of everyday life that helped shape the identity of Thessaloniki’s city centre. Ergon Foods has undertaken the commercial redevelopment and overall curation of this iconic landmark, acting as the project’s manager and development partner, with the ambition of breathing new life into the heart of Thessaloniki.
Today, bringing together an ecosystem of 30 establishments under one roof, Thessaloniki’s Central Market aspires to become a vibrant, people-centred destination for meeting, exploring and discovery in the heart of the city.
Restaurants, cafés, a tsipouro bar, traditional coffeehouse, bakery, pastry shop, dairy shop, pizzeria, burger restaurant, wine and spirits shop, bars, florist, food stores and a souvenir shop are just some of the diverse offerings within the Market. Together, they aim to become part of the everyday life of the city’s residents, bringing people together around shared tables from morning until night.
The development of the individual establishments was, from the outset, a matter of careful curation. Each has its own name, its own people and its own character, with the design and interiors conceived individually to bring out the unique identity of each space—from Herbarium’s old-pharmacy aesthetic to the vinyl records displayed alongside plants at Anthi-Fyta. Small-scale production units within the Market itself, such as Magia microbrewery and Farma Kozanis micro-dairy, supply the other establishments, tying the whole together as a living ecosystem that connects the Market’s past with the city’s present.
The challenge undertaken by the new management is, above all, a matter of respect: for the building’s rich history, for the memory of the city and for the responsibility to return it to its people. The aim is to restore the emotional connection between residents and the space, allowing the Market to once again become “the city’s market.” As Ergon CEO Thomas Douzis characteristically stated: “From the design to the day-to-day operation, the commitment is simple: to bring new life to a space that has always belonged to Thessaloniki and, gradually, return it to the embrace of the city.”
